Jan Gruber, Ph.D.
Jan Gruber is currently a Senior Research Fellow in the Neurobiology and Ageing Programme at the Centre for Life Sciences (CeLS), National University of Singapore.
From 1995 to 1998 Dr. Gruber studied physics at the RWTH-Aachen University (Germany) before reading Part III of the Mathematical Tripos (MASt) at the University of Cambridge (UK). Dr. Gruber then was a graduate student in the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics, Department of Biochemistry at Oxford University (UK). In Oxford he worked on cell division cycle control, protein-protein interaction characterisation and on tools for rational drug design, first obtaining MSc and later DPhil in molecular biophysics.
In 2005 he joined the laboratory of Prof. Barry Halliwell at the National University of Singapore. Dr. Gruber has been fascinated with the ageing process in all its aspects and implications for over a decade. His research aims to elucidate molecular mechanisms of ageing using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. In particular he aims to understand the role of damage in ageing and to test related intervention strategies against ageing and age-dependent diseases.
At SINAPSE Dr. Gruber is working on the development of microfluidics devices for the rapid assessment of learning and memory performance as well as age-dependent neurodegeneration in nematodes.
