Hae Ung Lee, Ph.D.

Dr. Hae Ung (Leon) Lee is focusing on the roles of astrocytes in neuron-glia communication and in higher brain function. Specifically, he identified the roles of astrocytes in short-term effects such as the modulation of neuronal circuits and memory, and in long-term effects such as development of central nervous system. During his research experiences, he has developed and applied strong methodologies, both in vitro and in vivo, to better understand the role of astrocytes in regulating neural function and transmission. For example, visualization of small molecules such as glutamate and ATP allowed me to understand the dynamics of releasing chemical transmitters from astrocytes. Furthermore, electrophysiology and immunohistochemistry were also applied to support and validate my research results. To understand higher brain function, he performed batteries of behavior tests. He also observed ultrastructure of neuron and glia through electron microscopy. Now, he is trying to explore molecular mechanism of communication between neurons and glia in activity dependent myelination. New technologies in SINAPSE (e.g. micofluidics, materials, patterning of electrodes and so on) will open great finding in the fields.
